Beurs van Berlage
The former Stock Exchange of Amsterdam (1903) is nowadays known as one of
the city’s most prestigious venues. The building is considered the start of
modern architecture in The Netherlands. Its brick-architecture is typically
Dutch and offers an amazing atmosphere in which early 20th century
functionalist details are combined with almost gothic splendour. The Main
Hall of the Beurs van Berlage is the largest hall in the centre of
Amsterdam. In 2002 the future king of The Netherlands, Crown-prince Willem
Alexander married Princess Máxima at the Beurs van Berlage. For more

architecture of modern governmental offices. From here we will pass the
Peace Palace and through the embassy quarter. Included is a visit to the

During this tour we will bring a visit to an ‘original’ middle aged
trading-vessel, “the Batavia”, that belonged to the Dutch trading company
VOC which maintained very lively and profitable connections between Holland
and former overseas Dutch colonies like Indonesia. A professional
explanation of the construction and history of the vessel will be given,
while craftsmen can be observed carrying out their skillful job on another
ship, “the 7 Provinces”. The original was from 1666 until 1674 the flagship
of the Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, one of the most famous sea-officers the
Dutch Republic ever had. In 1694 “the 7 Provinces” was decommissioned and
sold to be broken up. We will have lunch and a stroll at the former
free-port Enkhuizen with lots of relics from the 17th century. In Enkhuizen
we will visit the open air museum where the tradition of the fishing
villages along the former Zuiderzee is being kept. Here you will see
original buildings in authentic settings and every day life as it was in the
beginning of 1900. |
